Good afternoon,
=20
Just a last minute reminder that tomorrow morning is lay initiation for
Bryan Ritti and Rob Moore. This is our biggest ceremony of the year and =
we
would love to have you join us for this happy occasion. (A potluck dish =
is
always welcome)
=20
Next Sunday Jisen and I leave for a month-long Soto Zen Buddhist =
Association
novice priest training period. While Jisen will be honing her priest =
craft
skills and practicing with her peers, I will try to keep track of things =
on
the administrative level. (I serve as the SZBA=92s education director, =
but I
think that means I=92ll be cooking and cleaning in this situation!)
=20
On October 4, we will have an Intro to Zen class from 6-8 PM.
=20
Then while we are gone, I hope you will take advantage of the =
opportunity
provided by the arrival of two outstanding Soto Zen priests. On Saturday
October 6, 9-12 noon, Rev.Tonen O=92Conner from the Milwaukee Zen Center =
will
lead a discussion on Dogen=92s Bendowa. Here is a clip of what she wants =
to
discuss:
=20
"In buddha-dharma, practice and enlightenment are one and the same. =
Because
it is the practice of enlightenment, a beginner's wholehearted practice =
of
the Way is exactly the totality of original enlightenment." I'd like to =
get
a discussion going centered around the questions: What is practice? For
D=F4gen it was zazen in half or full-lotus. Physical problems pose a =
barrier
to many today, including myself. So are we shut out? What is =
enlightenment,
anyway? We can dig into D=F4gen's understanding of enlightenment as well =
as
the seven factors of enlightenment found in the Nikayas. I'd like to see =
us
develop an understanding of why D=F4gen focuses on zazen , yet also come =
to
understand that zazen may take forms of activity other than the =
traditional
posture.=20
=20
Sunday, October 7 at 10 AM she will talk on : "Fa-tsang, D=F4gen and a =
Soccer
Team". ( Hua-yen Buddhism's understanding of the relationship between a =
part
and the whole.)
=20
On Tuesday October 9th, Rev. Seirin Kohn, Head Priest of the Austin Zen
Center will lead zazen followed by tea and practice discussion. Then =
join
her in sesshin (formal retreat, prior zazen experience required) =
starting
Thursday evening October 11th at 7 PM and continuing until Sunday noon. =
For
this sesshin, participants are welcome to sit any part of the sesshin =
they
wish. Sunday services will follow our normal schedule and all are =
welcome.
=20
Please register for these special events. May I suggest you also =
consider
dana (a gift of support) for these two wonderful women teachers. Have a
great October and Jisen and I will see you in November.
